WELDING CURRENT RAILWAY

Where Should You Put the Welding Ground Clamp?

Every welding circuit needs a safe return route. Follow Current Line 01 from the power source to the arc—and safely back to the machine.

Destination: clean bare steel on the same workpiece, as close to the weld as practical.

Current Has to Return to the Welder

The arc is not the end of the circuit. Current leaves the power source, travels through the torch and arc, crosses the workpiece, and returns through the work clamp and work lead.

Terminology: it is commonly called a “ground clamp,” but work clamp and work lead more accurately describe its role in the welding circuit.
STATION 02 · SWITCHING YARD KEEP CURRENT OFF THE WRONG TRACK

Inspect What Lies Between the Arc and Clamp

Pull a route lever. Bearings, hinges, pivots, and sensitive electronics should not become part of the return path.

ROUTE BLOCKED · Current may pit bearing surfaces.
ROUTE BLOCKED · Small moving contacts may arc and heat.
ROUTE BLOCKED · Follow the equipment service procedure.
ROUTE CLEARED · Short continuous solid-steel return path.
02
Route rule: place the clamp so current does not need to cross a bearing, hinge, turntable, chain, bolted joint, or other uncertain connection.

If a machine or vehicle contains electronic systems, follow its manufacturer’s welding and isolation procedure. Do not assume the current will automatically avoid sensitive components.

STATION 03 · CLAMP PLATFORM CHOOSE THE STOPPING POINT

Which Platform Gives the Best Return?

Select a platform below the real shop scene. The recommended position is close to the weld, on continuous steel, but clear of direct heat and spatter.

03
Select the best work clamp positionPLATFORM APLATFORM BPLATFORM CPLATFORM D

A · Farther than necessary

The path is continuous, but more of the structure carries current than needed.

B · Recommended stop

Clean steel on the same workpiece, close to the weld while remaining outside the immediate hot and high-spatter area.

C · Too close to the arc

A short route is useful, but the clamp and cable should not be exposed to unnecessary heat and spatter.

D · Across an uncertain connection

Do not rely on a joint, pivot, or intermittent contact to carry the return current.
STATION 04 · SURFACE INSPECTION PRESENT A CONTACT TICKET

What Is Under the Clamp Jaws?

Insert a surface ticket into the inspection machine. A strong spring cannot create a reliable electrical connection through paint or heavy corrosion.

04
INSERT CONTACT-SURFACE TICKET

REJECTED · Paint

Remove the coating at the contact point. Tiny breaks in paint can concentrate current, heat, and arcing.

SERVICE REQUIRED · Rust

Clean heavy oxidation until the clamp can bite firm, sound metal.

CLEARED · Bare steel

Firm jaws on clean steel create the most predictable low-resistance connection.
STATION 05 · DEPARTURE PLATFORM FINAL PRE-ARC CLEARANCE

Clear Every Item Before Departure

Flip each line on the station board. The green departure notice appears only after the complete work-lead path has been checked.
